Community Action against Drug Abuse_NYFF Project

The Nigeria Youth Futures Fund project (NYFF)_Community Action against Drug Abuse (CAADA) is funded by MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation and implemented by Leap Africa and CFHI.

CFHI CAADA team went for community entry and advocacy visit to the different community heads / stakeholders in Dutse Alhaji and Dutse Sokale respectively to introduce the project and also to seek their collaboration in implementing the project.

The community leaders expressed their appreciation and in addition affirmed their commitment towards the success of the project.

CFHI organized an Online Panel Discussion on CBO’s Actions in the Elimination of VAWG

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the persistent and devastating human rights and 1 in 3 Nigerian women have experienced physical violence by age 15 (NDHS 2013).

In commemoration of the International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and as a follow-up to the National Consultation on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) held in 2021, the Centre for Family Health Initiative (CFHI) organized an online panel discussion on CBO’s Actions in the Elimination of VAWG across various geopolitical zones.

A total of 70 participants joined the event virtually including the panelists and the representatives. CFHI Executive Director, Krystal Anyanwu anchored the event and she spoke on the efforts made so far by CFHI in elimination of VAWG.

The event was a success as panelists discussed progress made so far and what could be done to eliminate violence against women and girls. Betty Abah one of the panelists stated that Pattern noticed in violence against women and girls is the continuous abuse of domestic help. Edo Ekata from Ministry of Women Affairs opined that Collaboration and synergy among public and private partners with government is important to curb GBV. Also, Barr. Mrs. Obiageli Oraka from African Resonance Initiative stated that Boys and Men should be integrated in the fight to eliminate VAWG in Nigeria whlie Ndodeye Bassey Obongha also educated the participants on the efforts made thus far by the Federal Government of Nigeria in the elimination of VAWG in South South region.

Education has a vital role to play in developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that enable people to
contribute to and benefit from an inclusive and sustainable future. Education needs to aim to do more than prepare young people for the world of work; it needs to equip students with the skills they need to become active, responsible and engaged citizens.


CFHI commemorated the World Children’s Day by organizing Spelling Bee Competition at LEA Primary School Sabon Lugbe along side other invited schools. Winner were provided with incentives and all participants were enlightened on the importance of education.

Presentation of Start-up Kits To 4GATES Beneficiaries

On Friday, September 23, 2022, 15 out of school adolescents were presented with different start-up kits (sewing machines, baking oven and hair styling equipment and accessories) after 9 months vocational skill training. The event took place at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Prof. Amaobi Uwaleke, the Eze Udo IV of Obilobi Uratta Ancient Kingdom in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.

4GATES Project Closeout Meeting

Centre for Family Health Initiative (CFHI) in collaboration with Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN) have been implementing the Global Action Towards HIV Epidemic Control in Subnational Units (4GATES) project across different communities in Owerri West, Owerri North, Owerri Municipal and Mbaitoli Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Imo State. 

As the project is winding up, a closeout meeting was held on 16th September, 2022 at Owerri Municipal Council with all key stakeholders present. 

Success stories of various interventions from all four thematic areas were shared, including interventions to support beneficiaries attain viral suppression, provision of emergency food and medical support, engagement of beneficiaries in psychosocial activities, payments of examination fees and block granting (classroom desks, renovation of classrooms, et al.), empowerment for income generating activities and vocational skills training including presentation of business start-up kits. 

Following the presentation, the royal father of the day, HRH Eze Engr. Samuel O. Ugboaja (Uba 1 of Ubahaeze) expressed his deep-seated delight that his people are beneficiaries of all the notable achievements being narrated such as the vocational skills training and provision of start-up kits like sewing machine, baking equipment, hair dressing materials.

Furthermore, he referred to the success story of the little child that recovered from Marasmic Kwashiorkor after CFHI and CCFN intervened, likening the picture to what they saw during the war. He concluded by saying that “I haven’t seen such organization that takes health issues as serious as you did for that little child and for all your services and interventions, the Almighty God will bless CFHI”.

Other stakeholders like the Women Leaders, expressed delight for the achievements of the project mentioning particularly the weekly contribution by the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) which has helped a lot of vulnerable community women in their businesses. 

The stakeholders promised to ensure the sustenance of the interventions, especially the VSLA groups which has contributed as a pillar to most of the small businesses managed by the community members.

In attendance were the traditional ruler of Ubahaeze Orodo in Mbaitoli LGA (HRH Eze Engr. Samuel O. Ugboaja), representatives of the Sole Administrators of the LGAs, the Directors of Admin and General Services, Directors of Social Welfare of 3 LGAs, representatives of the CPCs, selected beneficiaries (Caregivers and VCs) and a representative of CCFN.
